The Best Games for Kids’ Birthday Parties

Birthday parties are a staple of childhood. Whether hosting one for your own kids or putting together a surprise party for friends, a great kids’ birthday party can make memories that last a lifetime.

However, keeping a lot of kids entertained can be a lot of work, and it’s important to prepare plenty of activities beforehand. So let’s talk about some of the best games and places for kids’ birthday parties, to ensure your party is a hit with the kids!

Five Great Kids’ Birthday Party Places and Games

1 – Duck Duck Goose

It’s a classic for a reason – and a great option for early on in the party when the kids have too much energy and need to be worn out. In short: the kids sit in a circle, while one child becomes the leader. They walk around the circle patting each other kid on the head, saying “Duck… duck… duck…” until they choose one to say “goose!” and then it becomes a game of tag. The goose has to stand up and chase the leader around the circle. If the goose catches the leader, they become the new leader and the game restarts.

This one can also be renamed/rethemed around any show or character the children like. The “duck” and “goose” can be almost anything.

2 – Musical Statues

Another good one for burning off extra energy or sugar, musical statues is simple: You play music, while the kids can dance around however they like. But when you pause the music, they have to quickly freeze in place. Give out little rewards, like pieces of candy, for whoever has the best or funniest frozen pose. But if they move, or start laughing, they don’t get a treat.

3 – Pass the Present

This British classic (also called Pass the Parcel) is also great for American birthday parties. In short, a nice prize/present is wrapped in multiple layers of paper, boxes, and such. Each layer should also contain a small prize of its own, such as a cheap toy or candy. Then the present is passed around the group, with each child unwrapping one layer and receiving the prize inside. There’s no telling who’ll get the best prize at the center!

4 – Treasure Hunt / Scavenger Hunt

Need to get the kids out of the way for a while, such as when you’re setting the table for the cake? Have a treasure hunt set up. A couple of other parents can watch over the kids, while you get to do setup work in peace. The length of the hunt can be controlled by how many items there are to find, so it’s super flexible too.

5 – Boondocks!
