1 – What kind of racing?
There are plenty of kinds of autosports, and it’s best to try to stick to a single theme. F-1, NASCAR, Indy 500, or maybe even an ode to classic racing. Don’t forget all the classic movies themed around racing, from Herbie to Pixar’s Cars. You could even get fanciful. If your child prefers Hot Wheels to full-sized cars, you can work with that too.
Pick a theme your child will enjoy, based on their favourite cars, toys, or car movie, and they’ll be that much happier.
2 – Be sure invitations and decorations all match the theme
When you’re planning themed kids’ birthday parties, it’s important to go all-in. Your invitations shouldn’t be basic RSVPs, they should be event tickets or VIP passes. Put them on lanyards for extra authenticity.
The same should go for any decorations you buy or make. Be sure to include plenty of checkered flags, pennants, and red/yellow/green starting lights. Almost any road signs can also be used as decorations, such as using “one-way” signs to mark the beginning of queues. Plus, of course, the more car puns the better. Kids love “dad jokes” at least as much as dads do!

3 – It’s not a food table, it’s a refuelling station!
The car theme should definitely extend to the food, if you’re laying out your own spread. Keep the theme up. Try to use car-shaped bowls or printed paper plates, and appropriate tablecloths. Of course, the birthday cake needs to carry the theme as well. Put a #1 trophy on it for the perfect cake topper.
